The St. Lucie County Classroom Teachers' Association and Classified Unit was chartered in 1946 by the National Education Association and has been in continuous existence ever since. The constitutional purposes of this organization are:

  • To work for the continuous improvement of instruction in St. Lucie County toward the end that every child obtains the best education the community can offer.
  • To establish the active participation of its members in the formulation of education policies, and to promote the highest standard of professional practices.
  • To advance the economic and professional interests of its members, to protect our members' rights and guarantee members' rights to due process.
  • To seek relationships with other organizations to promote the public school system.
  • To promote education as a social agency for developing the capacities of the young, for enlightening adults, and for working toward a society motivated by the ideals of service and democratic participation.

In general, the SLCTA/CU is the certified bargaining agent for all instructional personnel and all clerical and paraprofessionals

In Florida , collective bargaining is a right of public employees governed by the Public Employees Relations Commission. However, Florida is also a "right to work" state which means that employees can choose whether or not to belong to the union that bargains for them. Approximately 70-80% of all eligible St. Lucie County School Board employees are union members. The SLCTA/CU is NOT obligated to represent bargaining unit members who are not union members. Our motto is "We work for YOU", and our members know that we are only a phone call away.
